Better Categories Naming

November 9th, 2005

I’ve just renamed all the categories of my blog. I’m not sure whether I’m doing the right thing. But, as a blog reader myself, I find that my new category names will definitely attract blog readers (like myself) to click and learn more about the categories.

Here are few of the changes that I’ve made:

  • Blogging - How to blog better
  • Internet - Worth-a-looks
  • Programming - Programmers should read
  • Online revenue - Earn online revenue
  • Software - Good desktop tools

What do you think about this? Or maybe you have better suggestions to replace the old ones?

If you are interested to do the same, you might need to do perform reordering for your categories.

UPDATE: When you are renaming categories for WordPress, make sure that you are not changing "Category slug" (the link to your category), simply because search engines might have cached your page. Your visitors might be brought to an error page if you change it.

If my article helped you solved your problem, consider buy me a beer!

How about instead of “how to blog better” just “blog better.”

EngLee says:

“Blog better” is simply to short if to be compared to other categories. “Make a better blog” sounds good?

Aarohi Johal says:

‘Blog better’ doesn’t cover anything related to Blogging outside the vicinity of ‘blogging techniques/tips’. Blogging covers more area.

EngLee says:

Yes, I agree with you.

But, I guess if it’s covering blogging technique and tips, it should be sufficient for the purpose of the category. :)

It seems that you understand the purpose of my category better. Good.

The new names are better and would surely attract more viewers for your blog. The new names suggests that they have been creatively thought and for the suggestion given by Aarohi, I disagree because people would be curious to know what is actually behind the ‘blog better’ catagory rather than the ‘blogging’ catagory coz I feel that the regular bloggers or blog readers are definitely tired of clicking this topic in many other sites which have included it a long time ago. That was only an example.
So, I conclude that this is really a good concept.

EngLee says:

‘Blog better’ MIGHT not be a very good example but having a better category name should definitely draw the attention of your visitors. ;)

Besides that, I think every blogger should spend some time to choose a better category name that represent the category better.
