I have seen lots of end-user enterprise PCs out there and man, they are legacy stuff. With limited RAM and processor speed, running XP with the Classic theme would be the best thing that would ever happen to them. It would be a sad day when Redmond announces the End-Of-Lifecycle-ing of XP. For performance reasons, these PCs are not running XP, but '98. Sad. I would like to see them running Linux with a minimalistic window manager, such as fvwm. End-user support is an issue with Linux though :)

Installing on a lower speced machine, XP is bound to run better. And there'll also be a lot of compatibility issues for existing software. More or less like when XP launched and some existing software refused to run on it. Soon, you'll see the 'Vista compatible' logo popping up all over the place on both software and hardware.

While Vista runs perfectly fine on a brand new machine that is 'Vista compatible', there's still alot of old machines out there. That said, you can still always run Vista without the advanced features on the older machines. We'll just wait and see what happens. For all we know, they'll delay Vista to the year 2048.

Maybe because I can't afford it? How about a 2 years old system with a typical Pentium 4, a typical AGP and 512MB DDR? Or a new budget Dell system?

I bet you will see significant performance problem in Vista if to be compared to XP. :)

Why would you put a brand new operating system on a 5 year old machine?
